Anishinaabe Botanical Teachings

Submitted by Bruce Cole

Ms. Geniuz was a traditionally trained apprentice in
the use of plants.  She also taught courses on ethnobotany at the University
of Wisconsin.  The book combines traditional teachings and stories with clear
information on use and preparation.  The stories really bring the plants to
life and provide a wonderful vehicle for understanding their use.

The Pocket Guide to 125 Medicinal Plants and their Uses (Healing Arts)

Was submitted by Brian Ruppert who writes:  I have a number of foraging/medicinal and edible plant books, and this is one of my favorites.  My only issue with this book so far is that the pictures of the plants are drawings and not color photos.

Secrets of Native American Herbal Remedies

Secrets of Native American Herbal Remedies

This is a good supplemental book. Note, it does not include any identification information, so you need to already know the plant or have another source. What it does have are good descriptions of the various uses of plants by different tribes. It follows up with a section on illnesses and provides recipes and the combinations of plants to use for specific illnesses and conditions.

Wise Woman Herbal Child Bearing years

This book does not address plant identification, but it does an amazing of identifying which plants to use for a vast array of issues for the mother and the child; anything from fertility enhancers to croup. I have not seen another book even close to addressing so many women's needs during these important years.

Medicinal Herbs, A Beginner's Guide: Rosemary Gladstar

Submitted by lafmore on Sun, 02/23/2020 - 19:28
Medicinal Herbs for the Beginner

If you're new to working with medicinal herbs, this is an excellent book. It's not a full guide to all herbs, but focuses well on some of the most common. It is also helpful because she describes specifically how to make all the different kinds of preparations, from decoctions to tinctures to salves and oils. She's also used all of these herbs herself for most of her life so the information is trustworthy.

Essential Wild Food Survival Guide; Linda Runyon

Essential Wild Food survival guide

This is a good companion plant guide, and one that I would probably choose for children. Linda's style is concise and organized so information is easy to find. It might not be the best for identification, but has information on what and when to harvest and how to prepare and preserve various plants. The book also contains information not always found in plant guides- nutritional information, presented in charts at the back of the book. It also has charts  about when to harvest plants and what part you are harvesting at that time. This is helpful information.

Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in the Wild: Steve Brill

Submitted by lafmore on Mon, 02/03/2020 - 16:37
Identifying and Harvesting in Wild

This is a good all around book on edibles and medicinals. Steve Brill teaches from a place of experience. This books lacks the detail that would later be provided by Thayer, but it is one of the best out there taught by a person who has harvested and used the plants he writes about.
