Discovering Wild Plants

The is an all around good book for the areas covered. There is enough information and photos and drawings to make is usable for identification and also has good plant information both traditional and contemporary. I like using this one in combination with others since it has some additional insights.

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Rockies: Linda Kershaw

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Rockies

This is a very well-rounded guide containing good descriptions, photographs, illustrations and descriptions of the harvesting and uses of the various plants. Good attention is paid to look-alikes and any adverse reactions to the plants as well as information on common poisonous plants. Unfortunately the ranges provided don't always indicate further north, although believe some of the plants do range into northern Canada.

Alaska's Wilderness Medicine: Healthful Plants of the Far North: Eleanor Viereck

Alaska's Wilderness Medicine

This book doesn't have a great deal of information, but was very useful to me to know what plants I had learned from further south, were viable in the far north. I found it helpful to know which plants grow naturally (or successful imports). This has helped me with plans for native seeds I want to take with me. The book has drawings and descriptions and focuses on the medicinal qualities of the plants. It's a good partner book for more detailed guides.

Food Plants of the Interior First Peoples; Nancy Turner

Food Plants of the Interior First Peoples

As in her book on Coastal First Peoples, Nancy Turner provides information on the traditional uses and uses today of wild edible plants by the local tribes. There is some redundancy between the two books, but also a lot of different plants based on the regions. The book covers the northwest US and western Canada.

Food Plants of the Coastal First Peoples; Nancy Turner

Food Plants of Coastal First Peoples

In this book, information is given on the historical and current uses of wild edible plants for the coastal tribes of northwest US and Canada. These are good for understanding the types of foods that sustained indigenous people. Although there are photographs and descriptions, this is not an ideal book for identification, but has valuable historically relevant information on food sources.

Medicinal Plants of the Pacific West; Michael Moore

Medicinal Plants of the Pacific West

If I had to choose only one book on medicinal plants, this would be the one. I say this, because the book provides comprehensive information. It helps with identification, when and how to harvest, how to make preparations and what doses to use for various ailments and illnesses.  Moore has extensive experience using these plants so this is one book you can feel safe to use when just learning medicinal plants.

Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants

This is an outstanding book with detailed information on identification, harvesting and use of medicinal plants from this region. One of the unique things about this book is the tremendous respect the author has for the plants and the information he provides about respect, sustainable harvest and protecting the species.

Plants of the Pacific Northwest: Pojar and MacKinnon

Plants of the Pacific NW Coast

This is a must have book for those in the Pacific NW. It doesn't focus specifically on edible and medicinal properties, but most listings include traditional uses, so with other books, it is very helpful to identify those that are edible and medicinal. It also has a large number of plants that I have not found in other books so can really help with the plant identification frustration.
